Since the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair’s launch in 1981, the Fair has striven to uphold the original mission of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan, the founding father of the UAE. The Sheikh believed in education and culture as fundamental pillars for building a strong modern state and developing international relationships. Initially named the Islamic Book Fair, the Fair was created to provide a meeting point and marketplace for publishing houses in the Arab world. It was also designed to be a forum through which to grow the region’s publishing industry, expand business activities across the globe and turn Abu Dhabi into a major centre for the publishing world. Abu Dhabi International Book Fair has since gone from strength to strength, today providing an ideal global marketplace and a gateway to the thriving Arab publishing industry. In recent years, the Fair has enjoyed celebrating Abu Dhabi International Book Fair’s and Abu Dhabi’s heritage, with a spotlight on their founder, entitled ‘Sheikh Zayed: Light Illuminates the Future’ – featuring a series of panels and seminars, as well as an exhibition charting his intellectual legacy. Abu Dhabi International Book Fair has also been proud to honour the works of other great Arab thinkers, such as the renowned poet Abu at-Tayyeb Al Mutanabbi and philosopher Ibn Rushed. Every year, we are thrilled to introduce international visitors to new dimensions of the region’s rich cultural and literary heritage. The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair is the bedrock of the publishing industry across the Middle East and North Africa. The 31st edition of ADIBF will be held from 23 to 29 May 2022 at Abu Dhabi International Exhibition Center. The Fair looks forward to stepping up its competitiveness, consolidating its regional position and enhancing its global presence through excellence in providing professional and cultural content. It also seeks to combine the regional publishing sectors and creative industries and encourage endeavors to support industries that contribute to enhance readable, visual, audio and interactive culture, thus consolidating Abu Dhabi's position as a hub for Arab publishing and global creative content. This further presents ADIBF as a global platform for creative content based on language in its global context.

Once a year, Frankfurter Buchmesse turns into the world capital of ideas. It is the most important international trade fair for publishing and content of all kinds - from novels and children's books to scientific databases. Here, experts from global publishing meet partners from the technology industry and related creative industries such as film and games. Thus, it is the hub of the international rights and licensing trade, and from here new cooperation’s and business models take their course. At the same time, the fair is a major cultural event, attracting literature enthusiasts and making Frankfurt the centre of the international media world in October. Frankfurter Buchmesse GmbH, based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, is the organisation behind Frankfurter Buchmesse. It is a subsidiary of the German Publishers and Booksellers Association (Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels). Frankfurter Buchmesse has been organised by Frankfurter Buchmesse GmbH since 1949 when 205 German exhibitors met in the Paulskirche in Frankfurt for the first post-war book fair. However, the history of Frankfurter Buchmesse goes back much further - to the 15th century. At that time, Johannes Gutenberg invented book printing just a few kilometres from downtown Frankfurt. Today, Frankfurter Buchmesse is the largest book fair in the world, an international trademark and a model for cultural events. The company is active in international publishing throughout the year and well beyond the trade fair days. Frankfurter Buchmesse is one of the world's most important international stages for current debates on international and socio-political events, bringing together people whose business is ideas, open a constructive dialogue on pressing issues, and meet on equal footing, with those who have different views. The book fair, is a platform to share passion for good stories, and experience creativity that engages all the senses, where fans of renowned authors can meet, and enjoy close encounters with some of their idols. Wordworks is a South African non-profit organisation that focuses on early language and literacy development in the first eight years of children’s lives. Since 2005 they have worked in under-resourced communities with adults best positioned to positively impact young children’s language and literacy development – parents and caregivers, family and community members, home-visitors, early childhood development practitioners and Grade R to Grade 3 teachers. They are working collaboratively to grow an informed, capable, resourced and motivated network of schools, organisations and institutions that promote the importance of, and work effectively for the improvement of, children’s early language and literacy, through their association with their programmes and materials. Wordworks offers training, resources and support for partners who wish to use their early language and literacy programmes in their own networks. Their programmes all include messaging about the importance of language for literacy development and the need to build children’s home language in the early years as a foundation for the acquisition of a second language. They advocate for children to have access to multilingual, language rich stories and books, as well as meaningful experiences with print. They also know that letter-sound knowledge and phonological awareness are key predictors of whether children learn to read and write, and have developed resources and guidelines to support these important foundations for literacy. Their programmes are based on an emergent literacy perspective and the idea that learning to read and write is a process that happens over time in the context of supportive and responsive relationships. They offer five main programmes, which are used by their network of partners which include preschools, schools, libraries, community organisations, training and resource NGOs, tertiary institutions, education districts and other government departments. Programmes are sustained through ongoing relationships with Wordworks, including refresher training and events, input and guidance, access to resources and opportunities, sharing of learning, and support for programme monitoring and evaluation. They develop, produce and distribute innovative, high quality multilingual materials to support early language and literacy learning. They invest in public education and advocacy, sharing knowledge and ideas to open doors for all children.

The Internet Archive, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, we provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, people with print disabilities, and the general public. Our mission is to provide Universal Access to All Knowledge. We began in 1996 by archiving the Internet itself, a medium that was just beginning to grow in use. Like newspapers, the content published on the web was ephemeral - but unlike newspapers, no one was saving it. Today we have 25+ years of web history accessible through the Wayback Machine and we work with 950+ library and other partners through our Archive-It program to identify important web pages. As our web archive grew, so did our commitment to providing digital versions of other published works. Today our archive contains: 625 billion web pages, 38 million books and texts, 14 million audio recordings (including 240,000 live concerts), 7 million videos (including 2 million Television News programs), 4 million images, 790,000 software programs. Anyone with a free account can upload media to the Internet Archive. We work with thousands of partners globally to save copies of their work into special collections. Because we are a library, we pay special attention to books. Not everyone has access to a public or academic library with a good collection, so to provide universal access we need to provide digital versions of books. We began a program to digitize books in 2005 and today we scan 4,000 books per day in 18 locations around the world. Books published prior to 1927 are available for download, and hundreds of thousands of modern books can be borrowed through our Open Library site. One of the Internet Archive's missions is to serve people who have difficulty interacting with physical books, so most of our digitized books are available to people with print disabilities (learn about access here). Like the Internet, television is also an ephemeral medium. We began archiving television programs in late 2000, and our first public TV project was an archive of TV news surrounding the events of September 11, 2001. In 2009, we began to make selected U.S. television news broadcasts searchable by captions in our TV News Archive. This service allows researchers and the public to use television as a citable and sharable reference. The Internet Archive serves millions of people each day and is one of the top 300 web sites in the world. A single copy of the Internet Archive library collection occupies 99+ Petabytes of server space (and we store at least 2 copies of everything). We are funded through donations, grants, and by providing web archiving and book digitization services for our partners. As with most libraries, we value the privacy of our patrons, so we avoid keeping the IP (Internet Protocol) addresses of our readers and offer our site in https (secure) protocol.

Ludovico Solima's Words from the museum deserve careful reading by those who work in and for museums. It is an excellent contribution of Italian museology to the redesign of the museum of the future. Ludovico is a professor of Economics and business management and lecturer of "Management of cultural enterprises" at the University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli" (former Second University of Naples), Department of Economics. Alberto Garlandini says he welcomes the invitation to write the preface of the volume Le parole del museo. The friend and colleague Ludovico Solima has chosen to present his many years of museological reflection through a list of items, the "words" mentioned in the title, and this represents a novelty in the editorial panorama of Italian museology. Ludovico says he was inspired by Michel Pastoureau's Dictionary of Colors of our time. As president of Icom, the International Council of Museums, I highlight that his methodology of research by items has many similarities with that by words and key concepts adopted by Icom to update the definition of a museum.

With 85% of the net purchase price going to the author/publisher, authors and publishers can charge readers significantly less for their works than would otherwise be possible through traditional print channels, while still earning greater per-unit profit on each book. When costs to the reader drop, there is a fundamental change to the demand side of the equation. This creates a virtuous cycle of more per-unit profit for the author/publisher, lower prices for consumers, and greater demand and consumption for written works. It’s a win-win-win for publishers, authors and readers.

Yani’s Corner is a newsletter on Substack written by Tiyani Chauke. It touches on her day to day activities and life through her eyes. Typing that out in third person felt so strange. Hello there, my name is Tiyani Chauke. A young woman born in a small village known as Elim, in the Limpopo Province and later bred in two well known metro’s in South Africa; Johannesburg and Pretoria. I am witty, fun-loving and quite the introvert. I am currently a stay-at-home mom that enjoys reading books, HIIT training and going hiking. I grew up writing short stories and distributing them throughout the classroom every second day. However one day all that stopped and I forgot about writing for quite some time until I had an interview with the founder of this platform. A 30 minute conversation reminded me of my love for literature and I was introduced to a platform made for people like me. I have a wide range of interests namely sports, fitness, visual arts, music and reading just to mention a few. The newsletter will bring forth interesting pieces on each of these topics, including my journey as a new mom during a pandemic. To enjoy some wholesome writing, simply click on the link and subscribe!

I am a God fearing individual, and I’m also a father to two beautiful kids, a boy and a girl. I worked for Tekkie Town as a Sales Assistant and I was chosen as the best Sales person for the entire Mpumalanga province. I also worked for the Department of agriculture as a Data capture. I have a passion for sports, football is one of my favourites and one day I wish I can own a soccer team. While I was in high school, I always wanted to be a lawyer but due to financial constraints I could not become one. My interest in the justice system came when I realised that the late former president Mr Nelson Mandela was also a lawyer representing his people. I wish one day I could give back to my community and its people because my community gave us the likes of the late Steve Bantu Biko, one of the BCM Members who fought for the people of South Africa. My community is one of the underdeveloped communities of this country, but I know that one day all of this will change because I know that with education anything is possible. When a child is educated communities will change for the better and if one community changes, then our country will change for the better as well and poverty will be no more. Education topped with one’s perseverance is the key to a bright future for all. With this pandemic people have lost their jobs and in some households you find that no one is working and people resort to drugs and alcohol, some get depressed to a point of taking their own lives. If we can start developing jobs for people, our continent would become a better place for us all. Being part of an initiative that supports the empowerment of those less privileged is one of my greatest wishes. I will be glad if all my wishes do come through because nothing is as important as education and hard work, and an educated country means a better world for us all.

I’m Toni-Leigh, born and bred in the Mother City of Cape Town. My fiancé and I, are parents to a lively 2-year old girl who arrived 5 years after losing our 3-year old son to a rare genetic disease. I love learning new things. Growing up, I was a voracious reader, reading anything and everything (even the classifieds and property ads) and with the advancement of technology over the years, I can have information at the tip of my fingers, so I’m always eager to learn new things and I’m a fast learner. I’ve always had an interest in Information Technology and was the go-to person in my office before my colleagues would go to the IT office, and now I’m looking into further studies so that I can develop my knowledge and skills. In 2005 I graduated from Varsity College with a Diploma in Travel and Tourism with aspirations of travelling worldwide in my profession. Things didn’t quite work out that way, having worked in retail and a company assisting young people to live and work in the UK. In the last decade or so, I’ve been in the tourism industry behind the scenes, working for an online holiday accommodation booking agency and more recently a company that does tours and safaris in Southern Africa. I also do freelance work remotely, such as, captioning for a speech-to-text service and social media evaluation. I am an introvert but enjoy working with and being in the company of others, while also enjoying being on my own. In the past I used to view being an introvert as a weakness because those higher up in the ranks of the companies I worked for were extroverted but in recent times I realised how much of a strength it is being an introvert as I also have a strong sense of empathy, which I believe is key in Customer Service and building interpersonal relationships with colleagues and clients. I’m passionate about customer service and going the extra mile and l love that feeling of knowing that I’ve made a difference in someone’s day whether big or small. People tend to describe me as hardworking, punctual, efficient, dependable and trustworthy. Covid-19 affected the tourism industry drastically, however, I still want to travel anywhere I can, just soaking up the different cultures and experiences. The last year has been both challenging and rewarding and it has made me see things in a different light and so it has been somewhat of a new beginning for me. I am motivated now more than ever to seek out new passions and adventures and to get out of my comfort zone.
